MARK MY WORDS
Just a few short years ago it was only in Industries such as
aerospace, oil/gas and medical/pharmaceutical where you would
expect to hear the word “traceability” uttered. But now, with
soaring costs for product recalls and an increasingly litigious
society, traceability is finding it’s way into almost all branches
of engineering.
Although it is simple enough to keep track of the paper trail,
how do you mark every component cost-effectively so that you
can trace its history, right back to the raw material.
Letter stamps and hand held engravers have historically been
popular, being cheap to buy and easy to use with no need for
training. However, if you work out the labour cost of marking,
say, an eight-digit code onto a steel component, the overhead
soon adds up. And what if your customer wants much more than
just eight digits? And what if your customer asks for a more
professional appearance for the marks on the components?
Many manufacturers of metal and plastic components are now seeing
the light and are investing in state-of-the-art equipment for
direct part marking. Pro-Pens P3000 benchtop rapid indent marking
machine (also known as a micro-percussion or dot-peen marking
machine) can quickly mark alphanumeric text in a variety of
fonts and formats, as well as logos and symbols.
Set-up is easy and the results are, quite frankly, stunning
when compared to hand engraving.
For manufacturers whose output is physically too large to fit
on the bed of the P3000, the M3000 is a portable marking gun
that can be carried around the workshop and used to mark large
machined components, castings, fabrications or assemblies. Either
way, comments from companies who have bought a Pro-Pen machine
are usually something like "It seemed expensive compared with
letter stamps but, now we have, we could not afford to be without
it."
